Notes Design references hornets, which holds significant traditional importance as a symbol for the city of Charlotte. Although it can not be conclusively proved, legend speaks of British General Cornwallis referring to Charlotte as a "hornet's nest of rebellion" as he attempted to flee after the Battle of Charlotte and the imagery has become an iconic staple of Charlotte culture for at least two centuries.
